Steven and I were excited to be traveling again after his knee replacement and headed west to see Great Sand Dune National Park, San Juan National Forest, Taos and Sante Fe.
From the mountains of North Carolina, towing a travel trailer, it took us 5 days to get there, and we stayed at two fun Harvest Host sites, a horse farm and a buffalo ranch.
After we set up camp in Alamosa, Colorado, we headed to the Sand Dunes. Steven and I were tired, so we only shot for about 30 minutes from the base of the dunes. The next morning, we took a trail across from the dunes and planned to hike the dunes later. Fate had other plans. Steven’s knee, not the one just replaced, was hurting him the next day and we ended up at a clinic getting him a steroid shot. The next day, his right eye lost sight and we had to travel 3 hours to see a specialist who advised us to drive home as quickly as possible because he had a torn retina. We left the travel trailer in Colorado and made it home in two days. Our total time in this area was probably about and hour and a half.
The day after arriving home, Steven had eye surgery. We are now in recovery mode. It has been a little over 2 weeks now, and he is doing well with some of his sight returning. He cannot travel where there are changes in altitude until the gas bubble placed in his eye is gone. We both hope that that won’t be much longer, and he will be able to see some of our beautiful fall colors.
At some point, we will have to return to Colorado to retrieve the travel trailer. Hopefully, we can spend a little more time doing what we originally set out to do.
The picture above is one of the few Steven got prior to sunset the 30 minutes we were at the dunes.
The one below, I took on the way in to see the dunes the second day.
